Congratulations to COCO KLEIN,

the winner of the 2017/2018 Piano Lesson Scholarship!

COCO is the 21ST winner of the scholarship. She has made outstanding improvement in overall playing ability,

timing, dynamics and interpretation.  In addition to her piano accomplishments, COCO also performs with two symphony orchestras and The Green Bay Girls Choir!

Each year, a student (or students) is awarded free piano lessons for the following school year. The scholarship is determined by the student's dedication and improvement in all of the aspects of piano technique and performance. Their performance at recitals, Solo/ Ensemble and off site venues is also a factor. Mike regularly gives his students opportunities to perform at some of his restaurant Shows, and hosts two Piano Recitals each year, in May and December.

The Christmas Recital will be held in December.

The Recital will be held in May at Calvary Lutheran Church.

Each year, over 32,000 students qualify at district levels to perform at State Solo & Ensemble Festival, making this event one of the largest in the nation.

I would like to congratulate my students who participated in Solo/Ensemble this year. Coco Klein and Kelton Lepak both earned First Place Awards!

Albert Einstein wrote the following in a letter to his son:
"I am very pleased that you find joy with the piano. This and carpentry are in my opinion for your age the best pursuits, better even than school. Because those are things which fit a young person such as you very well. Mainly play the things on the piano which please you, even if the teacher does not assign those. That is the way to learn the most, that when you are doing something with such enjoyment that you don’t notice that the time passes. I am sometimes so wrapped up in my work that I forget about the noon meal. . . "

The piano is the most complex of all musical instruments,

with more than 500 working parts in the action alone

and a combined tension on its strings of between 15 and 20 tons (that's right--tons).

Annual piano tuning is essential

for the student's musical ear development.

For advanced students, their piano should be tuned

in the Spring and the Fall, when the temperature

and humidity changes play havoc with the strings.

Practicing on a tuned piano

will help the student make more consistent progress.

Student and Parent References:

I have enjoyed Mike as my piano instructor over the past few years.

Mike has been very understanding and accommodating of my

busy adult schedule. He accepts my desire to quickly learn certain favorite songs and styles. Although some of the weeks I am not as prepared as I should be, I still look forward to my appointment. Mike's background as an active professional performer keeps him in touch with the "real world" of music that adults enjoy.... this helps keep the lessons more interesting.

I am a twelve year old student of Mike Garrity. I think he is an amazing teacher! He really helps me learn the piece by breaking it apart for me. He’s really patient, kind and helpful. He never yells at me if I am struggling with a song. He is very understanding and a fun teacher. He lets me pick out my own music if I want to take a break from my lesson book. I can’t stress enough how much of a great teacher he is!!

It is so wonderful to have such a talented piano teacher right in our neighborhood. My kids can even walk or ride their bikes to the lessons!! Mike is so patient and kind with the kids. They really enjoy learning different kinds of music. I love it because Mike is a great communicator and is flexible and easy to talk to. I highly recommend Mike Garrity!!

My three children have all taken years of piano lessons from Mike. I am constantly amazed at the goals my kids reach, thanks to Mike's teaching style. It seems that Mike is particularly fantastic at meeting the kids at their level; he just seems to know how best to reach them, even though they have such different personalities.

Something else that sets Mike apart from other teachers is his willingness to give the children some control in their musical genre and song choice. He gently guides them to be well-rounded by dabbling in various stylings, while at the same time allowing them to always have one of their own choices at hand. Since every child connects differently to a style and specific song, this method has kept my children motivated and excited about practicing and mastering their selections.

Mike expects a lot of his students, but he is always supportive of their other interests and hobbies; he really encourages balance in their lives. He is fun, patient, understanding, and gentle with students, all the while pushing them to reach their potential.

These nearly 8 years of piano lessons have been the best, thanks to Mike!
Thanks, Gina Vecera

I am very glad to have Mr. Garrity as my piano instructor. He has helped me along my musical journey since I was only nine years old. He's given me encouragement and help whenever I need it. This past year has been especially stressful for me as I am just beginning high school and he has provided me with encouragement in my studies. It is much more exciting to learn when you have an engaging and fun instructor like Mike.

I feel fortunate to have Mike as Alex's piano teacher. Alex has been with Mike for over five years now and his ability to pass on his knowledge, skills and talents to his students continues to impress me. Mike has many students who have achieved high marks with their piano skills which says a lot about Mike. He is dedicated, patient and wants to see his students succeed. He is willing to work with his students and the type of music they prefer to play which helps in developing a love for music. Mike takes great pride in his students' successes not only as a piano student but in their personal lives as well. He is very encouraging and seeks out the positives in each students' lessons and takes great delight in the individual personalities of his students.
